Captain William Jackman Memorial Hospital

Located in Labrador City, the Captain William Jackman (CWJ) Memorial Hospital is a fully accredited, modern health facility serving Labrador West. Opened in September, 1965, the hospital was named in memory of Captain William Jackman, of Renews, Ferryland District, who played a hero's role in the rescue of twenty-seven persons from the wreck of the vessel "Sea Clipper" at the Spotted Islands, in a great storm in 1867.

The hospital has 20 beds, six of which are designated long-term care beds for levels three and four nursing care. Inpatient units provide care to medical, surgical, obstetrical, paediatric, respite, palliative and intensive care patients. The hospital is served by six family physicians, a general surgeon, an anaesthesiologist and three dentists. Surgery is carried out in the major or the minor operating room. Maternity care is provided by family physicians and nurses.

  • diagnostic imaging - including general radiology, ultrasound and mammography services
  • physiotherapy
  • occupational therapy
  • oncology
  • respiratory therapy
  • speech pathology
  • dietary
  • health educator

Community Health provides the following client services: home care, health promotion, health education, child health clinics, child birth education, post-natal follow-up, health heart program and literature depot, adult immunization, communicable disease control, audio-visual testing services, pre-school health checks, school health program, wellness clinics, child youth and family services, mental health and addictions services.

There are also a number of visiting specialists who come to the hospital on a regular basis.
