Carson is a native of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, West Indies who emigrated to Canada in 1966. He arrived in Labrador City in 1969 and worked for the Iron Ore Company of Canada as a Cost Accountant for 31 years until his retirement in 2000. 

Sworn in as a Canadian citizen in 1975, Carson has an extensive commitment to the Labrador West community. His associations include the board of the Carol Wabush Co-op, the Walsh River Cabin Owners Association, and the IOC Joint Retirement Committee (DC Component of the Pension Plan). 

Carson and his wife Patricia, who also hails from St. Vincent and the Grenadines, have two children – a daughter who resides in Ontario and a son who lives in Labrador City.
