The Baby-Friendly Initiative complements Labrador-Grenfell Health’s vision of “Healthy People Living in Healthy Communities”.

Hospitals and community health centres set a powerful example for new mothers and families. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in 1991 and is known as the Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) in Canada. The BFI is focused on the role health care providers play in protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding and on the use of breastfeeding as a resource for strengthening primary health care in general.

In July 2018 the Labrador West Health Centre, Labrador City achieved Baby-Friendly Designation, the first facility in our province and in Atlantic Canada.

Labrador-Grenfell Health is working towards the Baby-Friendly Designation of all facilities throughout the region.
