The six Regional Wellness Coalitions across the Province evolved from the Heart Health Coalition in 2003 through the Provincial Wellness Strategy. The Wellness Coalitions, in addition to promoting heart health activities have a mandate of improving overall health and well-being of individuals, families and communities.

The coalitions not only work within goals and objectives that promote optimal health, but also contribute to the directions outlined in the Provincial document, The Way Forward: A Vision for Sustainability and Growth in Newfoundland and Labrador. Encouraging and building capacity for healthier lifestyle choices is a part of that vision. Because of our unique geography, Labrador-Grenfell Health region has two Regional Wellness Coalitions:

The Northern Wellness Coalition supports the Straits (Eastern side) from New Ferolle to Reef’s Harbour and the West side of the Northern Peninsula and the South Labrador Coast which includes L’anse au Clair to Charlottetown.

The Labrador Wellness Coalition supports Labrador communities from the north coast, west, central, and Cartwright – Black Tickle.

Funded by the Provincial Government (Children, Seniors and Social Development), the coalitions strive to foster partnerships and other connections to promote wellness and the importance of making informed healthy choices. With community outreach activities and their Regional Community Grants Programs, individuals and groups are enabled to bring healthy initiatives to their respective communities.

Regional Community Grants Program

The grants are designed to financially assist individuals and groups to promote healthy living in their communities. The maximum amount awarded to successful applicants is $1000. For more information on the grant program or to learn how to become a member please contact the Coalition nearest you.
