The Baby-Friendly Initiative
Hospitals and community health centres set a powerful example for new mothers. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) was launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF in 1991 and is known as the Baby-Friendly Initiative (BFI) in Canada. The BFI is focused on the role health care service providers play in protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding and on the use of breastfeeding as a resource for strengthening primary health care in general.
Labrador-Grenfell Health is actively putting the necessary requirements in place to achieve Baby-Friendly designation.
